Message: I have a Numark TT-2. The platter is metal, with a raised edge, The raised edge has an inner diameter of about 11.25 inches. Am I correct that I should get a 285mm mat with a 3.7 mm thickness?

Webmaster's reply: Yes. Either 3.7mm or 4mm should do very well.

Message: I use one of your mats on my modded Ariston RD11S and love it! Now I am interested in a mat for my Thorens TD160 (mark 1), one for my SONY PS-2250 and a third for my Phase Linear 8000 series two (same as Pioneer PL-L1000) - what would you recommend in each case? All of these decks have arms with adjustable VTA.

Herbie's reply: Hi, Rob. I recommend a Way Excellent II Turntable Mat for each of the
mentioned turntables.

For the Thorens, a full-size Way Excellent II-3mm Turntable Mat (w/ 40mm center hole if you use the pop-up 45-adapter).

For the Sony, A full-size Way Excellent II-3mm (or 3.7mm) mat with 4-3/8" custom center hole.

For the Phase Linear, a full-size Way Excellent II-4mm Turntable Mat.

Message: Which mat would you recommend for a Technics SL7 linear-tracking turntable?

Webmaster's reply: A full-size Way Excellent II-4mm Turntable Mat. If you use the pop-up 45 adapter, you'll want a custom center hole of the appropriate size. And, you'll set the disc size selector manually, unless you want to cut little holes in the mat for the automatic sensor.

Best wishes,

Message: This is a long overdue THANK YOU for your oh-so-aptly named Way Excellent mat.

Two Christmases ago I had just gotten that very expensive pure carbon mat (the Mat 1) for my Rega P5 table. But after reading rave reviews about the Way Excellent mat on the Audiogon forum and elsewhere, I decided to give it a shot against the other mat.

No contest, man. With your mat I could hear all the way to the end of notes, whereas with the carbon mat the notes were cut short and lacked the full natural decay your mat allowed my table to reproduce. Without question, the Way Excellent mat ranks as one of the most truly significant upgrades I've ever made to my system. Way excellent, indeed!

I have one question about cleaning the mat. What I've found that seems to work well is one of those lint removers with the sticky paper roll. Are these ok, or do they leave a residue?

Very best regards,
Anthony

Herbie's reply: It's best to just use a piece of masking tape. I use a 2" wide roll of masking tape, tear off a few inches and roll it into a circle, then just dab the mat lightly. It's easy and effective. Although I don't know of any leaving a residue, sticky lint removers can be very aggressive, and it's possible for the lint remover to peel the black "donut" elastomer up from its foam base. If you like using the roller, take it easy.
