MidFi+ Damping Instrument: low price, great value!

...

HAL-O 9 MidFi+ Damping Instrument

Delivering a surprisingly linear frequency response, MidFi+ tends to induce a subtle, gently rising bottom end, great for modest systems that are a bit lean on the bottom. A slightly more solid bass, without "bumps" or "valleys," together with increased clarity and reduced microphonics throughout the frequency spectrum results in a very pleasant and dynamic listening experience. Sandblasted Teflon ring with custom-forumulated high-temperature silicone damping pads. Not recommended for extremely hot-running 6H30 "supertubes" or EL84 power tubes.

"Impressed would be a major understatement. Looking forward to my next listening session to confirm my initial impressions (and give them more time to settle in), but if things stay as is or improve, best bang for buck tweek I have ever had in my system. In fact, bang for buck is the wrong term--this may be the best tweek I have ever added to my system period."

"These work great in my CAT SL1, more detail and less microphonics. Excellent price/effect ratio!"

"The change with the tube dampeners is subtle, but evident on the quieter passages."

"I began to notice something after roughly a little more than 30 min. of listening. The percussion instruments seemed to sound clearer, especially the decay made by cymbals. The bass seemed a little tighter and the midrange sibilants seemed to lessen a bit. The background seemed quieter. Maybe considerably quieter! Thinking that I’m imagining things, I played The Carpenters Singles 1969-1981 SACD (Rounder 2003). Same result. Karen’s voice was really heaven sent. Bass is fat and round. But what’s striking is the chorus portion of Sing wherein Karen was joined by children, is a lot clearer that you can almost distinguish several individual voices. I tried Alison Krauss and Union Station Live SACD. Lovely voice, quieter background and uncanny resonance from Jerry Douglas’s Dobro/National guitar. I especially remember the hecklers in the crowd, in between songs, you can now understand what the hell they are yelling! Denon Jazz Sampler Plus The Audio Tool Box II (Nippon Columbia 1994): crisper, more vibrant percussions, better bass. B&W Presents: The Academy of Ancient Music/Christopher Hogwood: lovelier Canon & Fugue. Big, big bass, gritty riffs and bends in The Sky Is Crying, great(er) playing in Little Wing (plus I heard somebody spoke at the background in the middle of the recording) and acoustic realism in Life by the Drop (The Sky Is Crying by Stevie Ray Vaughan Sony Music 1991). Muddy Water’s deep haunting voice seemed to gain more prominence in My Home Is In The Delta and Good Morning Little Schoolgirl (Folk Singer SACD MCA/Chess). But more noticeable is the subtle, understated guitar playing by the young Buddy Guy is a lot clearer! (Sonic Frontiers SFL-2 Preamp with Amperex 6dj8’s, with four Ultrasonic 9 dampers and four Hal-O 9 MidFi+ )"

"The rings look cool."

Tube dampers are very impressive! At first i have to point out a wideband cleaning effect and so I realize that I can turn my volume up without any listening fatigue. On CDs I know as well as my own pockets, I can clearly hear, here and there, some instrumental touch I hardly noticed before or I do not noticed at all! Soundstage is improved in deepness (it has made a step backward) and width (two feet sideward my loudspeakers). My hi fi set, for my opinion,  has made a step up in hifi classification, lacking a little grainy it had and increasing musical finesse.

"Some CD I always guessed too harsh and dirty, now strangely I can nearly listen to it. Naturally better recordings sound better and better. Choruses stand out clearly on the background, exactly characterized in every single component; voices are more focused opened and clear than never. On  CD 'Musica nuda' by Petra Magoni and Ferruccio Spinetti, female voice and acoustic bass solo, now is possible to hear clearly bass changing deepest notes and on track 6 the rithmic breathing of Petra in accord with the bass is absolutely to play on a good hi fi set, I got  goose-flesh all over! It is easy to distinguish by timbre the different electric basses used on the record for increased control on all low frequencies, for starting and decaying time that is nearly perfect and for lacking of booms and laps

"Every instrument seems to be -- how can I say -- 'more itself ', full bodied as I never heard. At least highs are more shining but dry, not poor or light indeed, and never become aggressive or overperformed. That is all and I think it is enough. It was a very good buy for me, thanks a lot, Steve. Greetings from Italy."

William McGee, Rockledge, Florida

"I have thoroughly enjoyed having the rings in the system, a very inexpensive and quite effective tweak that I have recommended and continue to do."
